Celebrate the enigmatic Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald this month in Asheville!

On Tuesday, March 10, 2020, the City of Asheville will mark Asheville’s fifth annual Zelda Fitzgerald Day, with festivities around town. Celebrate Zelda! events run all week, from Monday, March 9 through the following Saturday, March 14. As big fans of Zelda’s writing, painting, and memory, we’re excited about this year’s selection of events.

Interview with Therese Anne Fowler, Author of “Z – A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald”

Monday, March 9, 2020 at 6:00pm

Pack Memorial Library, Lord Auditorium, 67 Haywood Street

Therese Anne Fowler is the New York Times bestselling author of “Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald.” The book has been adapted as an original television series for Amazon Studios, starring Christina Ricci. Dr. Lisa Nanney will host this interview. FREE.

For our fifth year in a row, a member of Asheville City Council will read a special proclamation declaring this day as Zelda Fitzgerald Day in Asheville. 

“Amid the Rubble and Ashes: The Highland Hospital Fire”

The Thomas Wolfe Memorial, 52 N. Market Street

In recognition of Asheville’s annual Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald Day, the Thomas Wolfe Memorial staff will take a look at the events surrounding her tragic death. FREE.

“In Conversation: Zelda Fitzgerald”

Friday, March 13, 2020 at 12:00pm

Asheville Art Museum, 2 South Pack Square, 2nd Floor Gallery

“Zelda” (actor Terry Darakjy) and “reporter” (actor Carol Anders) have created a thought provoking interview that takes place in March of 1948, days before the Highland Hospital fire. This imaginary interview is based on historic research

Cost is included with general admission or free for museum members. Buncombe County Library card holders can go online to reserve a ticket.

Art Opening: The Story of Zelda

Saturday, March 14 at 12:00–3:00pm

Phil Mechanic Building, Stand Gallery, 109 Roberts Street

This mixed media art opening is presented by Aurora Studio, a nonprofit art space for artists who have been impacted by mental health needs or addiction. Light refreshments will be served. Aurora Studio & Gallery is the host of the week long Zelda Event series. The exhibit will be on display for the month of March. FREE.

A ROARING 20s Party with Queen Bee & the Honeylovers

Saturday, March 14 at 8:00–10:00pm

Ginger’s Revenge, 829 Riverside Drive, Suite 100

Queen Bee and the Honeylovers are an unabashedly joyful swing band that performs all-original compositions with a dedicated “nod” to the small-jazz-combo and “hot club” legends who first defined the genre. come decked out in 20’s period apparel, and you may win a prize for best costume! This event is FREE of charge with donations accepted for Aurora Studio & Gallery.
